Finally our 14er show is released. Little Bear peak located just outside of Alamosa,CO. This one was memorable as we encountered ice climbing to the top and had to dodge some rockfall as well. Very difficult climb but well worth the effort. We had a great time filming this one although the weather was a bit of a burden. We learned a lot about where we want our videos to be headed so look for some great enhancements coming next year. Again we wanted to thank our sponsors for this show:

So the last post in our summer backpacking series is about snacks. What do you take on the trail for food? Do you base it on pure flavor or do you look at what they bring to the table as far as nutrients and vitamins? Flavor is extremely important but if you do not have the nutrients that you need to keep hiking, you will bonk and increase your risk of injury or failure to reach your goals. I have been keeping track of the items I keep in my pack for fuel over the past few years and I have it down to a science now. First, never eat when you are hungry or drink when you get thirsty. Sounds stupid but the key is to be drinking and eating all along so that you never reach those symptoms. When you are exerting as much energy as some of us do on the trail, you will never catch up and keep going at the pace that you want. With that in mind, what do you bring and eat? I always pack energy gels. I keep one in my pocket and two in the front pouch in my pack. They are great to fuel up while you are moving so you don’t have to make any unnecessary stops. Second, I pack snacks high in protein and carbs such as jerky, crackers, cheese, salmon or tuna, and nuts. This last trip I packed in some Ricky’s Lucky Nuts and they were fantastic. They are the perfect blend of sweet and savory which is just what you need in an outdoor snack. They use all natural ingredients and the flavor is outstanding as well as addicting.

For hydration I stick with water. I tried Gatorade a few times and it is ok when you are not relying on energy gels. With the gels, the sugar in the Gatorade just puts me over the top. Water is the key although I do pack an Emergen C packet or some Gatorade Powder just in case I need some extra electrolytes near the end of a hike.

I am interested to see what others bring on their trips. I also highly recommend eating as much as you can when you get started on your trip and hydrate as much as you can the day before and the morning before you leave.

We just about a week away from our annual 14er trip in Colorado. This year we will be headed just outside of Telluride to climb El Diente, Wilson Peak, and Mt. Wilson. We will also be filming another episode of our cooking show while up there. Going to be an outstanding time and the food will be amazing. Pork tenderloin, Chili, Salmon, etc. This is not your usual backpacking food. Recipes to follow after the trip and we are looking forward to getting away for a weekend. We are working with some outstanding sponsors for this upcoming show such as Osprey Packs, Julbo Sunglasses, Tilley Hats, Terrasoles Shoes, Sunnyside Meats, Durango Joe’s Coffee, Ricky’s Lucky Nuts, and more to come. If you have any questions or want to join us up there on the trip, let us know.
