Steamworks Brewing – Backside Stout

stout.jpg

It is winter time in my hometown of Durango.  I know this because my roof is on the verge of collapsing any moment due to the four feet of snow on it.  So to deal with the situation, I am sitting in my apartment drinking some good-tasting Backside Stout from Steamworks Brewing Company in Durango, CO.  I am hoping to get drunk enough that I stop thinking about the looming death that awaits me from ten million pounds of snow crashing through my roof.

Stouts are traditionally a winter beer, heaver and much more complex than your summertime lagers. Backside Stout fills an essential hole to get us through the cold winter days.  This beer has a very smooth finish with some light hopped flavor.  It has a little sweetness along with a touch of brewer’s oats that gives it a very nice complexity.  I am not kidding about the smoothness.  I have hardly written anything about this beer and I am already done with my second pint.  I really need to start asking for more beer for my reviews.

I tried this beer after a big bowl of homemade chicken gumbo doused with Cajun power hot sauce.  Backside Stout makes for a very good dessert beer.  On the recommendation of one of my friends from Steamworks Brewing, I tried Backside Stout with some dark chocolate.  I am not a chick so I do not have a great chocolate addiction.  I will say that Backside Stout and chocolate go really well together. I also recommend trying them with some BBQ ribs or smoked brisket.  The sweet and lightly smoky flavor of the beer is a great complement to BBQ foods.

My roof has not fallen in yet so I may last another month to review more beer.  If you would like to learn more about Backside Stout and other beers from Steamworks Brewing please visit them online at http://www.steamworksbrewing.com
